Outdoor Living

As the beautiful evenings begin to draw in quietly, under the radar and as if hoping that we wouldn’t notice, we’re still making the most of this spectacular summer and our annual spell of outdoor living.

OK, so the last few weeks haven’t been great, with an apparent 49% increase in rainfall for August according to the Met Office. But this is the UK – changeable weather is hardly a new concept!

I’ve often said that as a nation we don’t make the most of the outdoors all year round, I mean we’ve got a long way to go before we experience what our Scandinavian neighbours know as Friluftsliv.

Don’t get me wrong, I also hate it when it’s “the wrong type of cold”, but surely, after thousands of years we can now begin to embrace and enjoy outdoor living all year round?

So, it’s September 1st and officially the beginning of Autumn, so why should we be outside? Well, as if International Talk Like A Pirate Day isn’t enough to get you out and about enjoying the fresh air, September also hosts British Food Fortnight, sees in the end of the main harvest season, as well as the Highland Games and Gatherings.

Of course these are all large, and incredibly important, national events - but what about at home? Well, it’s important that we make the most of the remaining warmth and enjoy the last few BBQ’s, weddings, and outdoor family meals that we love so much during the great British summer, but we should also look forward to the cooler autumn evenings. September is the perfect month to look back and reflect on the summer, and get ready for the coming season. We enjoy so many events throughout the cooler months, and whether they’re celebrated across the country or at home, let’s make sure we get out there and make the most of outdoor living during the coming seasons.
